V Balaram, one of India’s best known German tour guides, dies of cardiac arrest

One of India’s pioneering tour guides, V Balaram, passed away today morning due to cardiac arrest. He was 52-years-old. Balaram was a key driving force in popularising the Kerala Tourism brand in its initial days when very few guides could present a holistic view of Kerala and its culture. Balaram was a well-known German speaking guide, whose professionalism was instrumental in promoting Kerala as a destination of choice in source markets such as Austria, Germany and Switzerland. India, Indonesia, Philippines are likely to be the laggards in tourism recovery: ANZ Research

The tourism sectors of India, Indonesia and the Philippines are likely to be the laggards among countries trying to revive the travel industry, a report released by ANZ Research has said. Since most countries are now past the worst of their Covid-19 outbreak, restrictions on travel are being eased and appetite for travel would gradually return, the report said. But in the three aforementioned countries, the number of active coronavirus cases continue to rise, making recovery difficult. Promoting India as a Yoga Destination

To showcase the benefits of India’s ancient form of health science – yoga – and the potential of it as a tourism product, the Ministry of Tourism presented a webinar on ‘India as a Yoga Destination’ under the Dekho Apna Desh series. Tourism industry in shock after stimulus package abandons sector’s concerns

All leading industry associations representing the Indian tourism sector have expressed shock over the central government’s position of not addressing any of its concerns in the economic stimulus package, though the sector is in a standstill ravaged by the epidemic. India ranks 34th on world travel, tourism competitiveness index: World Economic Forum

Moving up six places up, India now ranks 34th position on world travel and tourism competitiveness index. The growth has been driven by the rich natural and cultural resources, alongside strong price competitiveness. “India, which accounts for the majority of South Asia’s T&T (travel and tourism) GDP, remains the sub-region’s most competitive T&T economy, moving up six places to rank 34th globally. India showed the greatest percentage improvement to its overall Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) score, which has helped it become the only lower-middle income country in the top 35,” said the report. MoT allots over Rs 2,000 crore for promoting India this fiscal

Ministry of Tourism, Government of India spent Rs 1687.06 crore and Rs 1986.04 crore during the years 2017-18 and 2018-19 respectively under its plan scheme on tourism sector. The Budget Estimate under the plan scheme for the sector during the financial year 2019-20 is Rs 2075.12 crore, informed Minister of State (I/C) for Culture & Tourism, Prahlad Singh Patel. The tourism sector contributed an estimated (direct + indirect) 5.06 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product of the country during 2016-17. Tourism sector has created around 14 million jobs in the country – KJ Alphons

The Tourism sector of India has created nearly 14 million jobs in the country, employing all sections of the society, in the last four years, said KJ Alphons, Union Tourism Minister. Tourism contributes 10 per cent of India’s GDP

Tourism has been playing a vital role in the economic development of India; the contribution of the tourism sector to the GDP is around 10 per cent in 2018 as per recent reports of ‘Statista’. Yogendra Tripathi joins Tourism Ministry as new Secretary

Yogendra Tripathi IAS In a reshuffle by the Government of India, Yogendra Tripathi has been appointed as the Secretary, Ministry of Tourism. Tripathi will replace Rashmi Verma. A 1985 Karnataka Cadre IAS, Tripathy has been Chairman & Managing Director of Food Corporation of India prior to his new appointment as Secretary Tourism. Prior to his position in the FCI, he has served as the Joint Secretary in the Department of School Education. He has also served at various levels of the government at the State, Karnataka, and in the Central departments during his more than three decade long career.

IIE organizes adventure tourism fest in Assam
