Happy news for people of Trivandrum!. Budget airlines, AirAsia and GoAir to start operations from Trivandrum. The airlines have expressed interest in starting domestic service from Trivandrum International Airport. Air Asia will start services to Bengaluru, while Go Air will have daily flights to Mumbai. Currently, Air Asia do not have service from Trivandrum. However, they had operated from Trivandrum during the floods, when Kochi International Airport was temporary closed. GoAir is likely to fly international from October, with the first flight to operate on the Mumbai-Phuket route. The bookings for the international flight will commence soon. The airline is expected to officially announce this development tomorrow. “We will be launching our international operations with a flight to Phuket (Thailand) from Mumbai in October. We have all regulatory approvals in place and the flight is expected to go into the system (bookings) in a week’s time,” said an official to PTI. The domestic air traffic grew at a robust rate of 26 per cent in April with various airlines together carrying 11.5 million passengers, up from 9.1 million in the same month last year, as per government data. SpiceJet holds the top position once again in terms of seat utilisation per aircraft with 95.5 per cent seats being booked. Owning to poor visibility as many as ten flights were diverted and four cancelled at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. Of the four flights cancelled was a Muscat-bound international flight scheduled to depart at 3.30pm. Airlines, including Jet Airways, Indigo, Spice-Jet and Air India, were forced to divert and delay flights due to poor visibility on the runway. The recent flight cancellations by IndiGo and GoAir because of engine failure and the high surge in ticket rates have turned the passengers violent as most of them started venting out their anger through the social media channels.

IndiGo and GoAir are planning to cancel around 620 flights this month due to engine malfunction. The airlines will give passengers an option to choose an alternate flight or get a full refund. Of which 480 belongs to IndiGo will cancel 480; the rest are of GoAir. Earlier this week, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had grounded 11 Airbus A320 neo aircraft due to recurring malfunctions in their engines.
