Iran has implemented a measure allowing officials to waive rules relating to stamping visas in foreigners’ passports. A report by Seday-e Miras, a news website affiliated to the country’s tourism department, said the decision is aimed at increasing visits by tourists. Since 2015, people that have travelled to Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen have faced restrictions when applying for visas to visit the United States. In June, Former NATO chief Javier Solana’s online application to enter the US was rejected for having previously travelled to Iran. Other countries, including Israel, have applied similar measures.

Looking at the increase in number of tourists, the Israel embassy has opened a visa application centre in Calcutta. The centre, housed on the seventh floor of Acropolis Mall, will cater to Bengal and the Northeast. “Residents of Calcutta and the Northeast will no longer have to send their documents to Delhi,” said Hassan Madah, Director, Israel Ministry of Tourism, India and Philippines. Israel has witnessed a record breaking growth of 82 per cent in Indian tourist arrivals to the country from January to June, 2018, in the last three years. More than 40,000 Indian tourists visited Israel in the last six months as compared to the 22,000 footfall during the same period in 2015 as per the statistics released by Israel Ministry of Tourism (IMOT). Israel received 2.1 million tourists during the first half of the year 2018, depicting an increase of 19 per cent compared to the same period in 2017 (1.74 million) and 26 per cent more than in 2016. In the month of June, 310,200 tourists visited Israel, according to reports released Monday by the Central Bureau of Statistics, which is 2 per cent more than in June 2017. The Israel Ministry of Tourism (IMOT) is all set to tour four Indian cities between July and August, with an aim to attract Indian tourists to the country. The campaign, which will feature roadshows in the cities, will highlight the West Asian nation as an attractive tourist destination. Israel is becoming a favourite tourist spot for tourists and the initial statistics affirm this. As per reports, Israel had 1.36 million visitors from January-April this year. In this, 4,08,000 tourists alone visited Israel in April 2018 when compared to 3,50,000 last April, recording a 17%hike. The Ministry of Tourism claims that the revenue from tourists in April had exceeded NIS 2.1 billion. Out of all tourists visited Israel in April, 2,38,000 were from Europe. With summer vacations fast approaching, most Indians are planning to head to long-haul international destinations with booking going up by 25 per cent compared to last year, said a report published by online travel company MakeMyTrip. About 50 per cent of the bookings are made by travellers in the 25-35 age group, says the report. “Long-haul destinations have registered higher growth this year compared to short-haul ones, with a significant 25 percent growth in the number of trips year-on-year,” said Mohit Gupta, chief operating officer, MakeMyTrip. Kuwait Airways has announced that it has suspended flights to Beirut because of security concerns. According to the airline, the decision was made following “serious warnings” from authorities in Cyprus. Earlier, Lebanon’s national airline, Middle East airline, said it was rerouting some flights because of the “recent security situation” between the United States and Syria. Close to 60,000 Indian tourists visiting Israel last year, marking a record growth of 31 per cent. With the new flight service by Air India between New Delhi and Tel Aviv, Israel now targets a growth of over 65 per cent in Indian tourist arrivals. As many as 60,000 Indian tourists visited Israel in 2017, compared to 45,000 in 2016 and 39,000 in 2015.
