With cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar as the star guest, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will flag off Champions Boat League (CBL) on Saturday alongside the famed Nehru Trophy Boat Race at the Punnamada lake in this coastal city. Hosted by Kerala Tourism, CBL is the country’s first-ever boat-race formatted on the lines of IPL cricket. The 66th edition of the Nehru Trophy boat race will be held on November 10, Finance Minister T M Thomas Isaac has said. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race Society (NTBRS) held at the collectorate in Alappuzha today. “We have decided to organise the boat race in November. This will help to revive the flood-hit tourism sector and Kuttanad,” the minister said. The boat race, scheduled to be held at Punnamada Lake on August 11, was postponed due to heavy rain and floods in the second week of August. Kerala’s backwaters and major rivers are all set for yet another season of traditional boat race – ‘vallam kali’. This year, the government is planning to commence a new concept in boat race - ‘Kerala Boat League’, following the pattern of IPL. “The first nine snake boats (chundan vallam), those display competence in the Nehru Trophy Boat Race will be participating in the KBL,”said the Finance Minister Dr. T M Thomas Issac. He was talking in the General Body Meeting prior to the 66th ‘Nehru Trophy Vallam Kali’.
