‘Tamilification’ of names, creates quite a stir

Next time you travel to Tamil Nadu, names of many places in the state may look a bit different.  The state government has issued a notification as per the recommendation of an expert committee for changing the names of 1,018 places, in accordance with how they are exactly pronounced in Tamil. The district collectors will now take steps for changing the names of these places through the local bodies concerned. The announcement in this regard was made way back in December 2018. Temples attract more tourists than beaches, hill stations

Compared to beaches and hill stations, more tourists are visiting temples in Tamil Nadu. Spiritual tourism is bringing lakhs of people to this southern state, with statistics indicating that districts with popular temples have emerged as top draws. The temple town of Kancheepuram ranked first followed closely by Chennai. According to statistics from directorate of tourism, both Chennai and Kancheepuram collectively account for 20 per cent of the total 38.59 crore domestic tourists who visited the state last year. Ooty all set to go plastic-free from August 15th

One of the most sought-after tourist destinations in India, Ooty in Tamil Nadu is going to be plastic-free from August 2019 onwards. The Nilgiri District Administration, is in charge of Ooty, has passed a rule to ban the sale of single-use plastics that include water bottles, food items packed in plastic, and soft drinks in the town and the highways leading to the district’s major towns. Kerala Tourism conducts partnership meet in Chennai

Tamil Nadu to launch massive tourism promotion project

Tamil Nadu government is planning to launch a massive tourism promotion project with an objective to attract more domestic and international tourists to the state. Specific circuits and regions will be identified to implement the projects. It was announced by O Paneer Selvam, Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Basic infrastructure like logistics, hotels and restaurants in the tourism destinations will upgraded to international standards under the Public Private Partnership model. Tamil Nadu bans one-time use and throwaway plastics

Tamil Nadu bans ‘one-time use and throwaway plastics’ in the state, with effect from the new year day of 2019. It was announced by Edapadi K. Palanisamy , Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in the Legislative Assembly. Orders have already issued to the concerned people on this regard. In order to create awareness of the ban on plastic, Chief Minister has launched a logo, website, mobile app and awareness videos for Plastic Pollution Free Tamil Nadu Campaign. Tamil Nadu to get USD 31 million ADB aid for tourism development

Tamil Nadu will get a loan of USD 31 million from The Asian Development Bank (ADB) to develop tourism and to enhance employment opportunities in the state. It was revealed by a finance ministry statement issued on December 11. This loan is a part of Infrastructure Development Investment Program for Tourism (IDIPT). “The project (IDIPT) will support the conservation and restoration of 8 heritage monuments, 1 museum, 3 temples and a pond,” states the press release. “It will build various facilities at the tourism sites, including tourist information center, rest centers and toilet blocks, with facilities served by solar-powered lighting ... Two-month trekking ban every year in Tamil Nadu

The state government of Tamil Nadu has banned trekking between February 15 and April 15 every year in the aftermath of the Kurangini forest fire, which killed almost twenty tourists earlier in March this year. The rules have been notified based on an expert committee report on the Kurangini fire. According to ‘Spatial and temporal analysis of decadal forest fire data (2006-2015)’ released by the Tamil Nadu Forest department, forest fires start in January, increase in February and reach its highest point during March. Supreme Court asks to seal 11 resorts on Nilgiris elephant corridor

The Supreme Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to seal or close down 11 resorts and hotels constructed on the elephant corridor of Nilgiris in violation of law within 48 hours . A Bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur directed the owners of the other resorts and hotels located in the area to produce their documents of approval before the Collector within 24 hours. Tamil Nadu tourists can soon fly on helicopters

Tourists in Tamil Nadu will soon be able to travel across their destinations on air. A feasibility report on heli-tourism has been submitted to the state government, as informed by KJ Alphons, Minister of Tourism, in the Lok Sabha. “The study was done for the introduction of helicopter services to provide heli- tourism in Tamil Nadu state including Madurai and the preliminary report in this regard has been submitted to the state government,” said the minister. Tea and Tourism festival begins in Ooty

The much famed Tea and Tourism festival begins in Ooty. The tea and tourism festival, which used to be held during autumn season, was included in the Ooty summer festival this year. The festival was introduced in 1994 to hold it in winter holidays to bring more tourists to the hills. The two-day event was inaugurated at the Research Centre for Tribal Culture building in Ooty on Saturday. This year the festival boasts 10 stalls and, on display are tea-ice cream and a variety of flavoured teas.

Villivakkam lake to be an eco-tourist spot soon

One more eco-tourist spot to be adorned in Tamil Nadu as the works for developing the Villivakkam lake into an eco-tourist spot officially began on Wednesday. The project was inaugurated by S P Velumani, the Minister for Municipal Administration. The lake that has of total area of 36.50 acres will have its 24.64 acres developed into an eco-tourist spot.
