A farmer from Himachal Pradesh has developed an innovative self-pollinating apple variety that does not require long chilling hours for flowering and fruit setting. This has spread to plain, tropical, and subtropical areas in various parts of India, where the temperature is as high as40 -45 ºC during summer. Bantony Castle With an aim to explore the untapped tourism potential of the state, Himachal Pradesh government has sought financial aid from Asian Development Bank (ADB) and got approval for projects worth of Rs 1,900 crores. It was informed by Jai Ram Thakur, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, during a meeting with Kenichi Yokoyama, the country director of ADB. For the first time in India, a railway station will be built inside a tunnel at a height of 3,000 metres, on the strategic Bilaspur-Manali-Leh line close to the Sino-India border. Once completed, the Keylong station in Himachal Pradesh will be the first on the railway network to be inside a tunnel. Keylong is the administrative centre of Lahaul and Spiti district, 26 km north of Manali and 120 km from the Indo-Tibetan border. “The Keylong station, in the project, will be inside the tunnel according to the first phase of the location survey. Union ministry has sanctioned the amount to strengthen the infrastructure of the tourism destinations under the scheme ‘Nai Raahein Nai Manzilein’ (new paths and new destinations)’. Under the project, the state government aims at encouraging home-stays through the private sector. Vallabh Government Degree College at Mandi Himachal Pradesh is seeking approval for a 50 crore tourism development fund from Asian Development Bank. It was informed by Jai Ram Thakur, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, while addressing a public meeting at Vallabh Government Degree College at Mandi. The Himachal Pradesh Technical University (HPTU) is giving an opportunity to do a course in adventure tourism.  The information was stated by Dr SP Bansal, Vice-Chancellor of the University. Dr Bansal informed that the central government had assured the university a grant of Rs 2.5 crore for the course. The vice chancellor also informed that the university will create its own facility to start the adventure tourism course. “A community radio, journalism and mass communication courses were also on the agenda,” he added. Himachal Pradesh government plan to have a light and sound show to depict the history of Shimla and its association with the Indian freedom struggle. “A place will be chosen for the light and sound show in line with the Cellular Jail in Andaman and Nicobar Islands,” said Jai Ram Thakur, the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. The Himachal Pradesh government has got approval from the Central government for projects worth Rs 1,800 crore for tourism development, informed the state Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur. The minister added that efforts would be made to develop lesser-known areas from the tourism point of view. “The Gada Gushaini area would be developed from eco-tourism point of view,” he said. To boost the tourism sector, Himachal government is planning to encourage ‘Heli-Taxi’ services at major tourist destinations, a senior official said today. Presiding over a meeting of the officials of aviation companies including Pawan Hans Limited, Skyone Airways, Ind Jet and hospitality players, Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Manisha Nanda said at present the state has three functional airports at Gaggal, Shimla and Bhuntar. “Work was in progress to facilitate the tourists and common people at Rampur and Jhakri in Shimla, Baddi in district Solan, Pandoh in Mandi and Manali in Kullu under Uddan-II scheme,” she said.
