Thailand mulls compulsory travel insurance for foreign visitors

Thailand is planning to introduce compulsory travel insurance for foreign visitors this year. Foreign travellers will be required to pay 20 baht each for the compulsory insurance at immigration offices in airports, which will be directed to Thailand’s Tourism Promotion Fund for coverage of payments in the event of claims. The compulsory travel insurance will offer up to 1 million baht of coverage in cases of death, with a maximum duration of 30 days. The insurance will have to seek approval from the Tourism and Sports Ministry before being forwarded to the cabinet later. Air passengers can now avail free-of-cost travel insurance of Rs 50 lakh if they book their tickets through Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). This facility will be available for passengers irrespective of the class of tickets and for both domestic and international flights. Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is offering you insurance coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh for financial protection against train accidents and other untoward incidents, including robbery, at a near-zero premium of 68 paise. The Indian Railways said it will not provide free travel insurance to its passengers starting September 1. Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has decided to stop free travel insurance starting September 1 and “the option of free insurance will be optional”.
