The government is planning to open around 100 islands in Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep for the development of eco-tourism. The project will be implemented on public private partnership (PPP) basis, Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog, said on Friday, 10th August 2018. Lakshadweep is planning to open its doors for tourism. The authorities have decided to invite investors to strengthen the tourism sector in the islands, while protecting the ecology and inhabitants of the islands. Lakshadweep MP Mohammed Faizal A B told reporters in Kochi on Wednesday that several tourism projects for the union territory were under consideration. On the meeting held for the review of the progress of comprehensive development of the Andaman-Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands on Saturday, 1st June 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi insisted an integrated tourism-centric ecosystem in the areas selected for tourism development. The tropical archipelago off India’s west coast, Lakshadweep, is all set to attract more tourists by opening up 12 of its virgin islands. Minicoy, Bangaram, Suheli, Cherium, Tinnakara, Kalpeni, Kadmat, Agatti, Chetlat and Bitra are the islands being opened up for tourism. The move is being implemented as part of the Centre’s initiative for holistic development of islands and will give a leg up to niche tourism in Lakshadweep. A containership owned and operated by Maersk international was caught on fire at the Arabian Sea near Lakshadweep. The fleet had an attendance of over 27 crew members with over 13 Indians on board. The news had been set out by an India Coast Guard, who has initiated the secondary rescue mission.
