United Airlines may end up furloughing nearly half its US staff by October

United Airlines has warned that 36,000 employees, nearly half its US staff, could be furloughed in October in a clear indication of how deeply the virus pandemic is hurting the airline industry. The outlook for a recovery in the airline industry has dimmed in just the past two weeks, as infection rates rise in the US and some states impose new quarantine requirements on travellers, according to a PTI report. United Airlines to cut flight schedule by 90%

United Airlines on Wednesday said that it has cut its flight schedule by 90% for the month of May and expects similar cuts for June as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The carrier said that travel demand is now essentially at zero showing no sign of improving in the near term. United disclosed its outlook in a memo to employees that it publicly released. United Airlines has introduced a daily nonstop seasonal service between Indira Gandhi International Airport and its hub at San Francisco International Airport starting December 7, 2019 – subject to government approval. United Airlines has submitted a formal application to the U S Department of Transportation (DOT) for authority to increase service between New York/Newark Liberty and Shanghai Pudong beginning in June 2020. Air New Zealand announced it will begin new nonstop service between Auckland and Chicago, beginning Nov. 30, 2018.
