India to strengthen measures to attract more Buddhist pilgrims

Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel has said that despite India being the land of the Buddha, not many Buddhist pilgrims visit the country. Hence corrective measures need to be taken to address this issue, he said. Despite India being endowed with rich Buddhist heritage, it attracts a very small percentage of Buddhist pilgrims, Patel said, while inaugurating a webinar on “Cross Border Tourism”. Central Government sanctions Rs 361.97 crores for five Buddhist Circuit projects

The central government has sanctioned Rs 361.97 crore for five projects Buddhist Circuit programme of the Uninon Ministry, which connects the heritage sites with significance of Buddhism across the country. It was informed by the Union Tourism Minister, KJ Alphons in the Lok Sabha. The Ministry of Tourism has identified Buddhist Circuit as one of the fifteen thematic circuits for development under Swadesh Darshan Scheme. The Buddhist Circuit projects are in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, connecting the Buddhist centers in each states. IHG plans four hotels in Buddhist Circuit of India

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), in partnership with Lotus Trans Travel Private Limited, is planning to establish four hotel portfolios under the banner of Holiday Inn in Bodhgaya, Kushinagar, Gorakhpur and Shravasti. Expected to open between 2020 and 2023, the four properties together will add 450 rooms to IHG’s inventory in India. As part of the agreement, Holiday Inn hotels in Bodhgaya, Kushinagar and Shravasti will be refurbished and upgraded while Holiday Inn Gorakhpur will be a newly build hotel.
