After Ayurveda and backwater tourism, Kerala is all set to attract globetrotters to its jails. If you wish, you can also spend a day in the jail, wear the jail clothes and taste the meals served to the prisoners at the Viyyur Jail in Kerala. You don’t have to commit any crime to land up in the jails, just pay the rent and avail the facilities there.

The Kerala Prisons Department have submitted a proposal to the state government in this regard. The project is proposed as part of the Jail Museum project in the central prison at Viyyoor in Thiruvananthapuram.

There will be separate blocks for men and women. If you remit the amount online, you can stay in the prison for 24 hours. During the stay the tourist will also share the same menu of the prisoner, so as to experience the real prison feel. But, however, you will not be able to interact with the other fellow prisoners.

The government has allotted Rs 6 crore for the projects, of which three crore will be spent this year and the other half the next year.

The plan of the museum is ready. The museum will have British-era records, warrants, registers, torture equipment, other equipment like motors and utensils on display. We will also recreate underground cells, condemned cells and old dark cells, which the public have never seen. There will also be a cafeteria and shops where jail products will be available.
