Twin tunnel in Maharashtra

As part of the Missing Link Project, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), is constructing one of the longest four-lane tunnels in the world, between Mumbai and Pune. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2021.

The project, joining Kusgaon village and Chavani village in Pune, would be at a length of over 19.8 km. The two twin tunnels will together constitute (4+4) four lanes for a hassle-free, to and fro commuting.

Construction programme would be a challenge as one of the tunnels would be passing 150 metre below a lake in Lonavala. “Though there are tunnels longer than these, there are none which sports this length with four lanes. They would be the widest tunnels at this length,” said MSRDC.

The MSRDC has invited bids to construct the tunnels. The project is expected to cost over Rs 4,800 crores.
