Dubai touched another milestone when Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, lit up during the New Year celebrations. The city now own the record for the largest light and sound show on a single building.  Tens of thousands of people gathered around Burj Khalifa to witness the record breaking laser show.

‘Light up 2018’ was conducted this year replacing annual fireworks display. It covered a surface of 109,252 sq metres, more than double that of the earlier Guinness World record. Dubai beat Hong Kong, which set the record in 2013 by projecting a laser show on the International Commerce Centre .

The Show began at midnight and lasts approximately seven minutes. Visual tributes were paid to the founding father of the UAE, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, to mark his 100th birth anniversary. This year is commemorated as the ‘Year of Zayed’.

People from all over the city, residents as well as tourists, reached the site as early as midday to witness the record-breaking show and welcome the New Year.  Many preferred public transport to avoid heavy traffic.
