Goa tourism

Besides being colonized by the Portuguese, Goa has a fascinating historical past, which dates back further to the 3rd century BC. A prominent part of the Mauryan Empire, Goa enjoyed prime importance because of its natural harbours and wide river base. Only in 1987 did Goa get the status of an independent state and the regional language Konkani was recognized as one of India’s official languages. Despite the multi-cultural influences on Goa, the state still boasts of a distinctive culture, which makes the destination an affable one.

Fairs and festivals in Goa are really a refreshing experience for the town dwellers as well as the visitors to the enchanting beach town. Various festivals and events in Goa are celebrated with all the pomp and show – Christmas, Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi, Feast of St. Francis Xavier, Shigmo, Three Kings Feast, Sao Joao Festival etc.

Fontainhas, also known as Goa’s Latin Quarter, is flanked by an ancient creek called Ourem Creek to the east and the Altinho hills with springs to the west. The walls of the houses have been finished with eggshells and chunna or limestone. Most houses sport a typical sloping roof, making the entire structure akin to the stick houses that we drew as kids. Adding to the charm are the artistic balconies and doors.

Goan cuisine consists of rice, seafood, coconut, vegetables, meat, pork and local spices are some of the main ingredients in Goan cuisine. The area is located in a tropical climate, which means that spices and flavors are intense. Use of kokum is another distinct feature. Goan food is considered incomplete without fish.
