Capacity enhancement for Navi Mumbai airport

There are plans to double the yearly passenger handling capacity of the Navi Mumbai International Airport. It has been decided that the capacity will be enhanced to 20 million and has announced the plans to increase the final capacity by 50 per cent to 90 million.

The initial plan was an enhancement of 10 million in the first phase and another 10 million in the second phase. At present, it is expected that the companies managing the airport will be able to complete the phases together.

Currently, the annual capacity is pegged at 60 million passengers, however, we are looking into the possibility of increasing it further, based on the projected growth,” a GVK official told ET.

The project, which is currently estimated at about Rs 16,000 crore, will have three terminals, with a provision to add a fourth one in the future. Once the project is completed, the airport will be able to handle 120 parked, landing and taxiing planes.

Mumbai airport is India’s second busiest and also the most congested airport, which handled 48.50 million passengers in 2017-18. It also holds the record for being the world’s busiest single-runway airport.
