In the forthcoming Durga puja, which is to be celebrated in October, a puja committee at Santosh Miitra Square in Kolkata is planning to use a chariot made of silver, priced at over Rs 40 crore, to carry its Durga idol. The offering is planned in relation to the committee’s 83rd year of celebrating Durga Puja.

“The chariot would be worth Rs 40 crore,  and will be sponsored by a jewellery brand. Last year, we made the sari of Durga idol in gold weighing 30 kg,” said the president of the committee.

“Using jewellery to adorn an idol of Goddess Durga is not a new thing. However, this would be the first time that a structure will be made of such an expensive metal,” said a member of the committee.

It was told, about 10 tonnes of silver will be used to craft the chariot, while the height of the pandal will be around 60 ft. The committee informed that the chariot may further be used in the celebration of Rath Puja in Orissa. Security measures will be taken to ensure no damage is made to the structure during the procession.
