Capacity building training for tourism stakeholders in Udupi

The Mangaluru district administration and the Department of Tourism will hold a series of capacity building training programmes in August for different stakeholders of tourism initiatives.

As per a press release on Tuesday, 31st July 2018, an orientation class for travel agents and hoteliers will be held at Koteshwar in Udupi District on August 6. A training programme for home stay providers in and around Udupi will be held on August 8. Another training programme for taxi drivers operating around Byndoor, Kollur and Kundapur will be held on August 9. Taxi drivers associated with Udupi tourism packages operating in Udupi and Karkala will have another training programme on August 10.

Kabani, a research and training organisation will be responsible for conducting the training courses.

These training programs aim at the comprehensive development of tourism in the Udupi district. It will be made sure community participation in planning and implementation of tourism projects. With the training programme, the authorities target empowerment of the local community from the grass root level, which will enable sustainable tourism in the district.

Different characteristics like, natural resources, human resources, local economy, culture, customs, religion, and features of the local community will contribute to this holistic approach.

“The district had huge potential to develop sustainable community-based tourism in villages and this could enable substantial livelihood opportunities and additional income for the rural population,” said Priyanka Mary Francis, Deputy Commissioner, Udupi.

“Sustainable community tourism is getting wide acceptance these days. Capacity augmentation programmes will promote exchange of experience and expertise of the local community, which will condense the negative impacts of mass tourism. Intervention of the locals in the policy making and management of tourism will facilitate improved living conditions of communities living in and around the tourist destinations,” she added.
