UDAN is not in favour of Kannur Ariport – Kerala CM

“Non-participation of Kannur Airport in the UDAN scheme is due to the possible loss of income for our state,” said Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarai Vjayan. He was delivering his keynote at the MP’s meet in Thiruvananthapuram.

“If we are part of the UDAN scheme, only one aviation company can operate in a particular route. It will adversely affect Kannur Airport, which is striving to be one of the best airports in India. The union ministry has assured to complete all the formalities related to the airport by 15th August,” he added.

The inauguration of the airport is scheduled in September 2018. Meanwhile, we should have the permission to land big flights in the Kozhikkode airport. Kozhikkode airport has to be declared as the embarkation centre for ‘Hajj pilgrims’. We are expecting to have a discussions with the Airport Authority Chairman in relation to the issues of Kozhikkode Airport.

Ministers, MPs, Planning Board Vice Chairman, Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretaries, Secretaries etc. were present in the meeting

Earlier, on 15th June 2016, the UDAN (‘Ude Desh ka Am Nagarik’) Scheme was released as part of the National Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP) of the Union Ministry.  The scheme was launched in October 2016 to stimulate regional connectivity through a market-based mechanism. The important objective of the scheme is to make air travel accessible to citizens in regionally important areas.
