‘Tent tourism’ coming up in Mysuru

Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel, Mysuru

As part of the initiatives taken by Karnataka Tourism Ministry for the overall development of tourism industry in Mysuru, an innovative programme named ‘Tent Tourism’ is recently announced by the Tourism Minister. The idea behind this project is to make Mysuru an ideal place for tourists to stay overnight, than a one-day picnic destination.

Tents in Rann Utsav – Kutch, Gujarat

Increasing demand for eco and adventure tourism where tourists prefer staying in tents instead of holidaying in permanent concrete structures made the Mysuru tourism authorities think differently to cater the demands of the tourists. This was successfully implemented in Gujarat in the name of ‘Rann Utsav’ in the heart of the Kutch District. Mysuru tourism intends to copy this success story.

While talking to the media, Minister for Tourism S R Mahesh said that over 50 acres of government land in front of Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel will be utilised for Tent Tourism. “Tents will be put up to be rented out to tourists to give them a new experience. Apart from regular destinations like zoo, Chamundi Hill, KRS, Tent Tourism will give a different experience to tourists so that they can spend time in the open air gazing at the stars,” he said.

“The area in front of Lalitha Mahal provides a beautiful view in the backdrop of the Palace and the Chamundi Hill and it will be a wonderful experience for the tourists with hundreds of illuminated tents. Food will be provided to the tourists and there will be 24/7 service,” he added.

The Lalitha Mahal Palace has been maintained by Jungle Lodges & Resorts after taking over the Palace Hotel from India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC). Now the Tent Tourism project will be handed over to Jungle Lodges & Resorts and an action plan is being prepared by Tourism Department Director Kumar Pushkar.
