Happy news for cyclists– Kochi Metro allows cycles inside metro

Kochi metro since its inception has been in the forefront when it comes to novel and innovative ideas. Adding another feather to their cap, and a pat on the back of the ever-growing cyclist community of Kochi, the KMRL has granted permission to passengers to carry their cycles inside the metro stations and the trains for free.

Cycling has grown leaps and bounds in the state after the spread of the pandemic with many people taking it up as a mode of daily commuting and many others enticed by its health and fitness benefits.

The decision is expected to encourage more commuters to take up cycling and to make it a part of their daily life.

As per KMRL officials, initially the exit and entry of cycles will be limited to six stations on the route, which includes Elamkulam, Ernakulam South, Maharaja’s College, Town Hall, Palarivattom, and Changampuzha Park metro stations. Based on the turnout and the future demand KMRL will decide on extending the service to other stations too.

Mr. Alkesh Kumar Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary, Kochi Metro said, “We have permitted cycles inside the metro to promote end-to-end connectivity with non-motorized mode of transport and also to encourage a healthy lifestyle. People are aware of the importance of fitness and exercise. This will encourage people to use cycles for their daily commute.”
