Thiruvananthapuram to get a face-lift

Akkulam Tourist Village

Kerala Tourism is planning a massive action plan to make Thiruvananthapuram one of the favoured tourist destinations in the state. It was announced by the Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran, during the function organized to dedicate the renovated Akkulam Tourist village to the public.

“Once the project is implemented, it will change the perspective of the capital city,” said the minister.

The government is planning to exploit all the tourism opportunities prevailing in the district. Projects are already underway for the developmental activities of the major tourist spots like Kovalam, Shamkhumugham, Veli, Ponmudi etc. in the district. Projects which have hampered in halfway due to various reasons will also be given preference for resumption. Finance for these project will be provided by Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).

“The government envisages comprehensive development of the tourism sector in the state,” said the minister.

“The contribution of the tourism sector to the state’s gross production is around Rs 43,000 crores. This is the second largest provider of employment, after agricultural sector. The state’s tourism policy is formulated based on these facts. The north-malabar region, where tourism has been in slow pace, has also been given importance in the tourism master plan,” added the minister.

Uha Titus, Principal Secretary of Higher Education Department and Working Chair Person of MDMC; K Vasuki, Thiruvananathapuram District Collector; P Balakiran, Tourism Director; members of the local bodies – V R Sini, Johnson Joseph, Sivadeth, Aneesh Kumar, Medayil Vikraman etc., were also present in the function.
