China to launch home-made ice-breaking ship

China’s State Shipbuilding Corporation has started the construction of Snow Dragon 2, an ice-breaking ship dedicated to breaking the ice in Polar Regions. The is under construction at Jiangnan Shipyard in China.

According to media reports, the ship is a combination of over 114 sections and 11 parts fused to form a single unit. The ship uses two-way technology to break ice simultaneously using both bow and stern.

“The project is not simply purchasing the designs and drawings from foreign companies this time,” said Wu Gang, chief designer of Snow Dragon 2.

The ship will be having the endurance to break 1.5m thick ice and can withstand temperature of up to 30degree Celsius. The ship is about to start its exploration to Antarctica by the beginning of 2019.
